Save costs and increase productivity with Rootense - the latest smart irrigation technology

New developments in the agricultural sector make our heart for water beat faster. So do products and systems that make water readily available, while also saving costs and promoting productivity. Following our mission to supply smart irrigation technology, we offer you the latest development - Rootense

  • Rootense is a smart irrigation technology, that not only measures the amount of water in the soil, but also the suction pressure of the crop.
  • Further, it allows you to know how hard the plant has to 'work' to get sufficient water. You can see that data in a desktop or mobile app and use it to adjust irrigation.

Viridix Root Sense - the smart investment

What are the advantages of Rootense?

  • Requires no maintenance
  • Gives you control over irrigation quality
  • Saves water = cuts your costs + helps the environment
  • Gives you a guarantee that plants are watered optimally

The Rootense will last for decades, without requiring any maintenance. This in itself makes the investment worthwhile.

If you value smart investments that will pay you and the environment back in return, Rootense is for you.

Growers who water their land with a huge water cannon still exist. It costs gallons of water and diesel to keep the beast running and it offers no guarantee that plants are watered effectively. After all, this old technology doesn't secure that water actually reaches the roots, or that there is no overwatering.

In contrast, Rootense gives you a guarantee. The sensors in the soil measure the suction pressure of the root. If too much water is being sprayed, you simply reduce the volume accordingly.

Used in combination with our drip hoses, Rootense offers growers dual savings. Only half of the volume of water is used with drip irrigation, and a lighter pump is needed, as the operating pressure is far lower.

Win-win, we say.

How to use Rootense?

How to use Rootense?

Before commencing, you install the sensor at an appropriate spot on the plot. Bosta recommends that you choose a spot where the soil reflects the average of the entire area of land. Bury the two sensors at depth of up to 30cm, then install the box about one metre above ground level. Activate the control system by simply downloading the Viridix Root Sense app. Scan the QR code on the Root Sense box, and you can then read the measurements remotely. Wherever and whenever you choose.

Like a spider in the web

Like a spider in the web

Harm spends time on the front line, day in day out. He receives countless irrigation queries from international colleagues, which were originally posed by their customers.Regardless of whether it relates to the irrigation of several hectares of a major potato grower’s land, a new sprinkler system for an arable farmer, or a watering system for a tree nursery. Harm devises a plan to supply these customers with the most efficient system possible. He spars with his colleagues about the idea. He checks out the site to establish whether the plan is feasible. He then contacts the appropriate Bosta employees, suppliers and installers to get to work on the project. Harm remains involved until the very end. And he is not satisfied until the customer actually achieves greater yields or improved performance.

Dedication for optimisation

Dedication for optimisation

The seed germinated in sales and managerial positions at garden centres, including the gardening department at Karwei DIY store, and later at Bosta and MegaGroup. At home, too, Harm pursues his passion. He considers it a sport to use as little water as possible. For instance, he has fitted equipment including a solar water heater and a wastewater system that reuses rainwater. As he has various relatives engaged in arable farming, Harm is all too aware of the importance of proper irrigation. Green fingers are part of his DNA. He developed an affinity with nature and the environment as a junior member of the nature conservancy association, and later when working at a lily nursery. That was where the seed was planted for Harm’s irrigation expertise.
